GTA 6 Map Size: How Big Is Leonida Compared to GTA 5?

GTA 6 beach view from the trailer

One of the biggest questions about GTA 6 is simple: how big is the map, really? The short answer is that the state of Leonida is expected to be roughly two to three times the size of GTA 5’s map, with the most common community estimate landing around 2.5 times bigger.

The important catch is that Rockstar has never released an official size. Every figure you’ll see online, including the ones below, comes from fans who measured the trailers and leaks. So treat these as well-informed estimates, not confirmed facts. Here’s what the numbers actually say and why they vary so much.

The quick comparison

GameEstimated map sizeWhat it covers
GTA 5 (2013)~75–80 sq kmLos Santos and Blaine County
GTA 6 (Leonida)~125 sq km of landThe full state, roughly 2.5x GTA 5

GTA 5’s world is usually measured at around 75 to 80 square kilometers of land. The leading community estimate puts GTA 6’s explorable land at about 125 square kilometers, which works out to roughly 2.5 times larger.

Where these numbers come from

Fans aren’t just guessing. Every Rockstar game since 2008 runs on the same engine, RAGE, and one unit in that engine is roughly one meter. That lets the community measure distances between landmarks, road signs, and coordinates seen in trailers and leaked footage, then scale the whole map with reasonable accuracy.

The most widely cited figure comes from a GTAForums mapper who calculated the fan-built map at 125 square kilometers of landmass, about 2.55 times the size of GTA 5. Other analysts landed in a similar range, with estimates between 2.1 and 2.7 times larger depending on how they measured.

There’s a good reason to take this seriously: fans did the same kind of mapping before GTA 5 launched, and their version turned out very close to the real thing. If history repeats, these GTA 6 estimates should be in the right ballpark.

Why the estimates vary so much

You’ll see some wild numbers floating around, with a few claiming the map is 256 or even 324 square kilometers. That huge gap comes down to one thing: water.

Leonida is based on Florida, so it has a long coastline, islands, and a lot of ocean around it. If you count all that water, the total area balloons. But players won’t spend much time in empty ocean, so the playable land area is the number that actually matters, and that’s where the ~125 square kilometer, 2.5x figure comes from. When you see a much bigger number, it’s almost always counting open sea.

Why GTA 6 will feel even bigger than the numbers

Map size in square kilometers only tells part of the story. A few things will make Leonida feel larger than the raw figure suggests:

  • Density. Early footage shows a world packed with detail rather than long empty stretches. More to see in the same space makes a map feel bigger.
  • Variety. The map spans six very different regions, from the neon city of Vice City to the Grassrivers swamps and Mount Kalaga’s forests. Switching environments makes the world feel vast.
  • Interiors. Rockstar is putting a strong focus on enterable buildings, so a lot of the “size” is indoors and underground, not just on the street map.
  • Draw distance. The game can render much farther into the distance than GTA 5 could, which makes the horizon, and the world, feel wider.

So even if the final land area lands near 2.5x GTA 5 on paper, the experience of exploring it should feel like a much bigger jump.

How Vice City compares to Los Santos

Vice City is the urban heart of the map, the same way Los Santos anchored GTA 5. In the current fan-built maps, Vice City looks a little smaller than Los Santos, but most people expect the final city to be bigger and far more detailed once the game is out. Either way, the key difference is that Vice City is just one part of Leonida, while Los Santos was the main event in GTA 5. This time the city is the centerpiece of a much larger state.

How big is the GTA 6 map?

The most common estimate is around 125 square kilometers of land, roughly 2.5 times the size of GTA 5. Rockstar hasn’t confirmed an official number.

Is the GTA 6 map bigger than GTA 5?

Yes. Community estimates put it at about 2 to 2.7 times larger, with most settling near 2.5x.

Is the GTA 6 map mostly water?

There’s more water than in GTA 5 because Leonida is based on Florida, but the land area is still around 2.5 times bigger than GTA 5’s.
