GTA 6 vs GTA 5: Every Major Difference We Know So Far

GTA 5 and GTA 6 comparision side by side from the trailer.

GTA 5 set the standard for open-world games for over a decade. Now GTA 6 is about to raise it. With the sequel launching on November 19, 2026, here’s a clear, honest breakdown of every major difference between the two games, split into what Rockstar has confirmed and what we still only expect.

A quick note before the details: GTA 6 isn’t out yet, so some points below are confirmed by Rockstar, while others are based on trailers, leaks, and what the new hardware makes possible. We’ve labelled which is which throughout.

Setting and map

This is the most obvious change. GTA 5 took place in Los Santos and Blaine County, Rockstar’s version of Los Angeles and Southern California. GTA 6 moves across the country to the state of Leonida, based on Florida, with a modern Vice City (its take on Miami) at the center.

The scale is also far bigger. GTA 5’s map measures around 75 to 80 square kilometers. Community mapping puts GTA 6’s land area at roughly 125 square kilometers, about 2.5 times larger — though Rockstar hasn’t confirmed an official number. Beyond size, GTA 6’s world covers six distinct regions, from the neon city to swamps, islands, farm towns, and forests.

Confirmed: the setting. Estimated: the exact map size.

Characters and story

GTA 5 followed three playable protagonists — Michael, Franklin, and Trevor — and let you switch between them on the fly. GTA 6 shifts to two main characters, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, a criminal couple with a Bonnie-and-Clyde style relationship at the heart of the story.

The big first here: Lucia is the first female lead in a mainline Grand Theft Auto game. Rockstar has leaned into the partnership between the two characters as the emotional core of the plot, which is a clear change from GTA 5’s three separate-but-linked storylines.

Confirmed: two leads, Lucia as the first female protagonist.

Release and platforms

GTA 5 launched in September 2013 on the PS3 and Xbox 360, then came to newer consoles and PC over the following years. It went on to sell more than 200 million copies, making it one of the best-selling games ever.

GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only. There’s no PC version at launch — Rockstar is expected to bring one later, following its usual pattern, but no date has been announced. Older consoles like the PS4 and Xbox One are not supported.

Confirmed: date and launch platforms. Expected: a later PC release.

Graphics and engine

Both games run on Rockstar’s RAGE engine, but GTA 6 uses a heavily upgraded version built for current-gen hardware. The jump in visuals is dramatic. Side-by-side comparisons from the trailers show far more realistic lighting, water, skin, and reflections — to the point where many fans joke that GTA 6 makes the 2013 game look like an older title.

A lot of this comes from next-generation lighting techniques and the raw power of the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, which weren’t available when GTA 5 first launched. The result is a world that looks closer to real life than anything Rockstar has made before.

Confirmed: a clear visual leap (visible in trailers). Expected: specific tech like ray-traced lighting.

Loading times and hardware

GTA 5 originally ran on hard-drive consoles, which meant long loading screens, especially in GTA Online. GTA 6 is built around the fast SSD storage in the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, so loading should be far quicker, with much less waiting between sessions and after deaths.

Expected, based on the hardware.

World detail and NPCs

One of the biggest behind-the-scenes changes is how alive the world feels. GTA 5 had fairly predictable NPCs and limited building access. GTA 6 is shaping up to offer far more reactive crowds, smarter NPC behaviour, dynamic weather (fitting for hurricane-prone Florida), wildlife like alligators in the swamps, and many more enterable interiors.

Leaks have also pointed to smaller gameplay refinements, like characters being able to crouch lower and interact with more of the environment. Take these as early signs rather than final features.

A mix of trailer footage, Rockstar’s stated focus, and leaks.

Online mode

GTA Online turned GTA 5 into a money-printing machine and kept it alive for more than a decade. Rockstar has confirmed GTA 6 will have its own online mode, but has shared very little about it so far. Given how important GTA Online became, expect the GTA 6 version to be a long-term focus with regular updates after launch.

Confirmed: an online mode is coming. Unknown: the details.

So, is GTA 6 a big leap over GTA 5?

On every measure we can see so far — map size, visuals, world detail, and hardware — yes. GTA 6 looks like a true generational jump rather than a small step. The one honest caveat is that the game isn’t out yet, so the final experience could differ from the trailers and leaks. What’s clear is that Rockstar is aiming to do to GTA 5 what GTA 5 did to the games before it.

How many characters does GTA 6 have compared to GTA 5?

GTA 5 had three playable characters. GTA 6 has two, Jason and Lucia, with Lucia being the series’ first female lead.

Is GTA 6 on the same platforms as GTA 5?

No. GTA 6 launches only on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a PC version expected later.
